How to choose and use sunscreen products right
It seems that no one needs information about necessity of using sunscreen products. All of us understand how important they are for the health, beauty and skin youth. And still, choosing and using products with SPF, we often make mistakes. This is due to common mistaken beliefs and beauty-myths. We decided to dispel some illusions of them.
1. IN THE SHADE OR IF IT IS CLOUDY WEATHER YOU MAY NOT USE SUNSCREENS
It’s a myth! In fact, about 50% of UV rays fall on the skin in the shade, and up to 75% passes through the clouds. And the A-rays (causing aging and cancer) are practically not filtered. And if it takes much time to get a sunburn in cloudy weather, you can get old at the same time as in the scorching sun. Conclusion: in cloudy weather, you can only slightly reduce the degree of solar protection, but not refuse it. Dermatologists believe that the level of SPF in the means for the face should not be less than 15. Even if you have already got a sun-tan. This is the minimum at which you can avoid wrinkles.
2. SOLARIUM PREPARES YOUR SKIN FOR SUNBATHING
It’s a myth! Solarium lamps produce 10 times more A-rays than the sun in Egyptian midday. In addition, melanin, which is formed in a solarium, is somewhat different from what is produced under natural UV irradiation. This is noticeable even in shade. Therefore, the skin will still have to “start all over again.” And you need to use the means with SPF. You should not rely on bronzer; it has nothing common with melanin. The active substance of these means reacts with the horny cells of the skin, which is why they acquire a dark shade. This process has no relation to tanning, and the skin’s protection against it does not increase.
3. IF YOU APPLY A CREAM WITH A HIGH PROTECTION LEVEL IN THE MORNING, YOU CAN LIE IN THE SUN ALL YOU WANT
This is a myth, although, indeed, a similar conclusion is forced upon you when you read the definition of SPF – “a factor that shows how many times increases the self-defense of the skin.” The latter, for most of us, is 10-15 minutes (the time that can be spent in the sun without the risk of sun-burning). Therefore, it is logical to assume that the means with SPF 50 will allow to lie in the sun for more than 8 hours. However, dermatologists claim that there is no such cream that would not miss a single UV ray. And during the hours of the highest solar activity (from 12 to 15) completely nothing can protect the skin. And at this time the most intense aging and damage to DNA cells occurs. At this time, it is better to go into the shade.
4. DARK SKINNED PEOPLE CAN USE PRODUCTS WITH LOW SPF UP TO 10
True. But you need to apply the selected mean again every hour or two. Low SPF (degree of protection up to 10) is perfect for those with dark skin, dark hair, who quickly darken and never burn in the sun. All the rest such degree of protection can be used, only already tanned. The average SPF (from 15 to 25) is an ideal choice for those whose hair color varies from dark blonde to chestnut. But the skin is light enough to burn. High SPF (from 30 to 50) – the standard protection with which people should start with light or red hair, as well as light sun-sensitive skin. In addition, these means should be in the arsenal of all who sunbathe close to the equator. To protect sensitive areas such as nose, forehead, ears, shoulders, chest, and feet, it is better to choose products with the highest SPF 50+ factor.
5. DAY CREAM OF FOUNDATION WITH SPF CAN BE USED INSTEAD OF SUNSCREEN
It’s a myth. The ratio and quality of filters in common creams or foundations is not intended for a long stay in the sun. And these components are aimed more at combating photo-aging. They will not protect against burns. Products from the solar series are able to provide not only optimal protection, but also comfort, since they include infrared filters that reduce overheating. In addition, currently, some of the sun creams sports composition, rich with vitamins and other active ingredients. They not only perfectly protect the face, but also take care of the skin, restoring and rejuvenating.
6. CLOTHES – THE PERFECT MEANS OF SUN PROTECTION
True, but only when it comes to special clothes from UV radiation from modern fabrics. Usually such things are sold in sports shops, they are necessary for those who are engaged in jogging or team sports in open areas. A typical T-shirt misses about 70% of the UV rays of the A-spectrum, which corresponds to the degree of protection from 3 to 4. True, it reflects 80% of B-radiation. Conclusion: it is difficult to get sunburns in clothes, but easy to grow old. So, apply a protective cream, even when you go for a tour or shopping in hot countries.
7. LEFTOVERS FROM LAST SUMMER CAN BE USED NEXT YEAR
Half-and-half. Modern sunscreens are in working condition throughout the year. Then the activity decreases. In addition, open, half-empty tubes – this is the ideal soil for the bacteria formation, especially if the means were lying in the sun. Therefore, always first check the cream on the smell and apply on a skin limited area to eliminate irritation. Remember that the protection degree of such means may not be the same as before. Therefore, apply it more often, but it would be better to buy a new one.
